Based on the New Line Cinema film written and directed by JOHN WATERS
Our production will be directed by David Rutter with musical direction by Geoff Osborne and choreography by Debbie Marks.
It will be performed at the Mercury Theatre Wed 24th January through to Saturday 3rd February 2018.
Auditions will only be held on Sunday September 3rd 2017 at Prettygate Junior school 10am. There is no alternative audition date.
Pre-audition rehearsals will be Mon 21st, Thurs 24th, Mon 28th and Thurs 31st August 7.30-10pm at Prettygate Junior school. You will need to attend these rehearsals to learn the pieces for audition, which will include a dance routine for the chorus.
The story is set in Baltimore, 1962, and focuses on Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, who is on a mission to follow her dreams and dance her way onto national TV. Tracy’s audition makes her a local star and soon she is using her new-found fame to fight for equality and integration, bagging local heartthrob Link Larkin along the way.
We are looking for a cast of up to 45 people, aged 16 years and over, and auditions are open to new, old and returning members of COS and CO2 (over 16yrs). The cast for this show needs to be a mixture of white & black ethnicity in order to depict the black segregation that was part of life in the early 60’s in America, an issue addressed in the story of this musical. Our society membership at present is mostly members of white ethnicity and therefore we are particularly looking for new members of black ethnicity to be a part of this production.
We wish to stress that we are an inclusive society and welcome members of all ethnicity. Whilst for this show we are looking for some cast members of black ethnicity, we will not exclude anyone based upon ethnicity. We cast every show by audition and select the best and most suitable people for the parts. Even if members are not successful in auditions for a particular production they still remain members and are welcome to participate in future auditions and productions too. Any new members that join for a specific production, such as this, are welcomed and encouraged to continue to participate in future productions also.
